Day care for people living with dementia is provided by adult day centres, to give people with dementia support and friendship, while also giving unpaid carers a break from their responsibilities.

Adult day care centres are usually open in the daytime during the week and sometimes in the evenings and at weekends too. Some may also provide transportation if needed, and meals for those attending the day centre.

Benefits of day care for people with dementia and their loved ones

For people living with dementia, there are multiple benefits to attending a local day centre:

  • A chance to meet other people and be social
  • Providing structure to their week
  • Fun activities, such as crafts, music, baking, painting and exercise, and support with these activities if needed
  • Outings to local places of interest

How to find a suitable day centre

Alzheimer’s Society has a dementia directory on their website where you can look up local support service, including day centres.

When enquiring, make sure that the day centre has experience of accommodating people with dementia. Here are some questions you may want to ask:

  • Are there any restrictions (for example, age) on who can access the service?
  • Do the staff have specialist training in caring for someone with dementia?
  • What is the cost for the day centre? Are meals included in this cost?
  • How is the safety of the day care participant ensured? For example, how do they make sure that a person experiencing confusion doesn’t wander off the premises?
  • Is transportation provided if needed?
  • What kind of meals and snacks are provided?
  • What type of activities are provided?
  • If there is an emergency, what are the procedures?
